 Ultra VioletMinimize

Ultra-violet (UV) which comes from special ultraviolet lamps has a wide range of applications from sun tanning to sterilizing, from phototherapy to photolitho reproduction and many others.

The main applications are listed in the column on the left.

The electromagnetic spectrum which stretches from microwaves, radio, and Radar through infra-red and visible light to ultra-violet, x-rays, gamma and cosmic radiation, all form part of the radiation spectrum.

The ultraviolet portion of the radiation spectrum is divided into into:

UVA         (380-315 nanometres). This is the healthy part of ultraviolet which we receive from the sun and from lamps. It is safe radiation.

 UVB

(315-280 nanometres) Most of this band of ultraviolet which comes form the sun is filtered out by the atmosphere. But a small portion does penetrate and reach the earth's surface. The wavelength is more detrimental to humans and prolonged exposure can result in skin damage which could lead to cancer

 UVC

(280-180 nanometres  This is the dangerous portion of ultraviolet which attacks the genes and DNA chains in living cells and destroys them. This part of ultraviolet is used to destroy or sterilize viruses, bacteria, moulds, spores and other pathogens. Its germicidal and sterilizing action is used in a myriad of applications, some of which are listed in the left column of this page
